Common Subaru Services
Raleigh's Trusted Subaru Service Shop
If you drive a Subaru, you already know the boxer engine is different from everything else on the road. That flat layout gives you a lower center of gravity and better handling, but it also means head gasket replacement requires more labor than a conventional inline engine. The EJ25 in older Outbacks, Foresters, and Legacys is the most common engine we see for this issue — external oil and coolant leaks that get worse over time. We've done this job more times than we can count, and we know how to do it right. It's one of the core services in our Japanese auto repair program.
Newer Subarus with the FB25 and FA20 engines are better on head gaskets, but the FA20 had early oil consumption issues that Subaru addressed with a revised piston ring design. The Lineartronic CVT used across the lineup needs regular fluid changes to stay healthy — Subaru recommends every 25,000 miles for severe conditions, which includes stop-and-go driving around Raleigh. We also replace a lot of CV boots on AWD models and worn wheel bearings that develop a hum at highway speed. Older Subarus can also develop exhaust system issues including catalytic converter failures and rusted exhaust flanges. For any engine repair or maintenance, we know these vehicles.

What Raleigh Drivers Say About Us
Real experiences from real people.
Took my car in for a brake job and they were upfront about exactly what it needed — no upselling, no pressure. Fair price, done the same day. This is how a shop should be run.
Found these guys when my check engine light came on and every other shop was booked out a week. They got me in same day, diagnosed the issue, and had it fixed by the afternoon. Definitely coming back.
Honest mechanics who actually explain what's going on with your car. They showed me the worn parts, gave me options, and didn't push the most expensive fix. Refreshing experience.
Subaru Issues, Recalls & What We Fix
Active Recall: Defective Wheels
NHTSA 25V033000 affects 2025 Forester — over 20,000 vehicles with potentially defective wheels. Ask us to check your VIN for open recalls.
Outback & Forester: Most Complained
NHTSA data shows 1,579 complaints on Outback and 1,076 on Forester. Common issues: oil consumption, head gasket leaks, and CVT problems.
2014-2015 Forester: Oil Consumption
Excessive oil consumption on the 2011-2015 Forester and Outback averages $1,500-$3,100 in repair costs according to NHTSA complaint data. The EJ25 head gasket is the root cause on many of these.
Head Gaskets: $1,500-$2,500 (Not $4,000)
EJ25 head gasket replacement is Subaru's signature repair. Johnson Subaru Cary charges $2,500-$4,000. We do it for $1,500-$2,500 with MLS gaskets.
Oil Change: $45 vs $120
Johnson Subaru Cary charges $75-$120 for a synthetic oil service. We use the same 0W-20 spec oil and OE filter for $45-$65. Same protection, lower bill.
Head Gasket & AWD Specialists
EJ25 head gasket replacements and AWD differential services are our most common Subaru work. Routine jobs for us, not a special occasion.
